The current New York Knicks big man has recently alluded to opting out of his Knicks with deal. He broached this while also teasing a possible return to the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he played from the 2014-15 season until 2017, while speaking with Fred Katz of The Norman Transcript when he was in OKC for game 5 of the Thunder’s first round battle with the Utah Jazz.
Katz: Are you going to opt out? You are technically on the Knicks.
Kanter: Until July 1,yes. We’ll talk to teams. We’ll see.
Kanter was also extremely complimentary of the Thunder fan base, which his statements, coupled with his presence at Game 5 have fueled speculation that a return to Oklahoma City could be possible.
“Man, I don’t wanna say nothing crazy and make the New York fans sad, but this place [was] always special for me. It doesn’t matter — 10, 15 years from now — it’s gonna always be in my heart, because it actually was my first home, Oklahoma City…I was just outside. Everybody was yelling. Everybody was — I can’t tell you how often I get texted, ‘Enes! Come back! You should come back! Come back!’ Whatever. I think it just shows how nice the Thunder fans are.”
Kanter has said that he wants to return the Knickerbockers and even end his career there so this could be a leverage play.
